Grand Canyon - 1

3 September (part 2). We reached the Grand Canyon in time for the mellow, late afternoon light and spent a wonderfully serene and satifsfying few hours wandering along the South Rim from lookout point to lookout point. Highly recommended!

The haze was with us for most of our time here. I kept on expecting to smell smoke, but this is just urban pollution - it travels a lot further than we assume!

The range of colours and textures is astonishing.

I can't quite decide how real this composite image is. The individual photos look as though they should make a single jig-saw, but it's amazing what the software can do with images that don't truly match...

One of the photos used in the stitched image.

Yes, coins do kill birds -- the metal poisons them.

Duh! Still, I suppose they have to warn us. I found the sight of people cavorting by the edge nerve-wracking at first.

More amazing textures.

Me, of course. How could I resist?

American Beauty, glimpsed in the car park. I love photographing details of cars (and motor bikes!) and I like the reflection in this one.

Those textured, creamy coloured rocks mark the edge.

There they are! (Talking of edges...)

Time for a rest.

A long way down, but it's hard to show the scale of it in a photo.

Late in the day, a happy smile from Kees.
